Anti-Termite Protection Moves from the Surface to Inside the Plywood

Greenply Industries has introduced TermiVax, a new anti-termite technology designed to provide protection throughout the plywood instead of depending only on surface treatment. For plywood dealers, distributors and carpenters, the launch brings an interesting new talking point in a market where termite protection is an important buying factor.

Termites remain one of the biggest concerns in wooden furniture and interiors, particularly in humid and moisture-prone areas. Traditionally, anti-termite protection has often involved chemical treatment or coating on the surface of plywood or treatment carried out during furniture installation.

Greenply is now taking a different approach with TermiVax.

The company describes TermiVax as a “vaccinated” anti-termite plywood technology powered by proprietary nanotechnology. The word vaccinated is a simple marketing way of explaining the concept—the plywood is not literally vaccinated. According to Greenply, the protective compound is introduced during manufacturing and is designed to penetrate deeper into the plywood rather than remain only on the outer surface.

Why is this important for carpenters?

A plywood sheet normally goes through a lot of work before becoming furniture. Carpenters cut it, drill it, route it, screw it and sometimes reshape its edges.

With a surface-only treatment, cutting or drilling can expose areas that were previously inside the board. Greenply says TermiVax has been developed so that anti-termite protection remains present deeper within the plywood even after such fabrication work.

For carpenters, therefore, the practical benefit being claimed is simple: termite protection is built into the material rather than depending only on a coating applied after the furniture is made.
